About Stevens Institute of Technology

Stevens Institute of Technology is a premier, private research university situated in Hoboken, N.J. overlooking the Manhattan skyline and was founded in 1870.It was named after John Stevens, a colonel in the Revolutionary War, who purchased the site of the present-day 55-acre campus of the University in 1784 from the newly American state of New Jersey. The school was exclusively for male students until 1971, and now, females make up close to 30 percent of the student body. It has 3 schools and one college, namely: The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science, The Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management, The School of Systems and Enterprises, The College of Arts and Letters. Stevens also has a campus in Washington, D.C., where graduate students interested in working in the government sector can study systems engineering, maritime security and more.

Location

Hoboken, where Stevens Institute of Technology is located, may be small, but its brownstones radiate a big city’s vibe of youthful energy complete with hip restaurants, cool bars and funky shops. It is a very clean, friendly and fun town and only a step away from the best city in the world-NYC. The people only complain of the high cost of living, but besides that it is a good place to be in.

Weather

Summers are typically hot and humid, with statewide average high temperatures of 82–87 °F (28–31 °C) and lows of 60–69 °F (16–21 °C). Winters are usually cold, with average high temperatures of 34–43 °F (1–6 °C) and lows of 16 to 28 °F (?9 to ?2 °C) for most of the state, but temperatures could, for brief interludes, fall below 10 °F (?12 °C) and occasionally rise above 50 °F (10 °C). Spring and autumn may feature wide temperature variations, with lower humidity than summer. Average annual precipitation ranges from 43 to 51 inches (1,100 to 1,300 mm), uniformly spread through the year. Precipitation falls on an average of 120 days a year, with 25 to 30 thunderstorms, most of which occur during the summer. Blizzards and flooding throughout are common in the winter and in spring.

Financial aid

Financial Aid is available in the form of Assistantships and Fellowships through the Academic Departments. Assistantships and Fellowships are awarded on a merit and availability basis and not normally awarded to first year graduate students.

Crowd and campus life

On campus, in Hoboken, N.J., there are more than 120 clubs and organizations, including about 15 fraternities and sororities. Housing is guaranteed for four years, and more than 60 percent of students choose to live on campus. The Stevens Ducks mainly compete in the NCAA Division III Empire 8 Athletic Conference, and, through the school’s Adopt-a-Team program, all student athletes have a faculty mentor to help them juggle sports and school work. But most of all, the campus lies along the Hudson River, and New York City is a boat or subway ride away. Outside campus, the students have this beautiful town and NYC to themselves, so there’s never a dearth of anything or a moment of boredom!

Alumni

Notable Stevens’ alumni include Alfred W. Fielding, one of the inventors of Bubble Wrap packaging material, and Frederick Winslow Taylor, widely known as the father of scientific management.
