About Lehigh University

Lehigh University is a premium research institute in the United States. It was founded in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania by Asa Packer, an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Lehigh University confers degrees through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Economics, P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science and College of Education. US News places it among the top 50 Universities in the US for Engineering.

Location

Lehigh University is located in Bethlehem, PA- a historically and culturally vibrant community. This hillside university is a convenient drive from Philly or New York City. This beautiful city has been nicknamed ‘the Christmas City’ of the US. Historic Bethlehem is a quaint area with beautiful homes, delightful shops and eateries on charming cobblestone streets. Home to Musikfest- the largest musical festival in North America holding more than 600 free live performances in all genres of music- this place is the place for a music lover to be in. Bethlehem also hosts athletics and cultural festivals, a classic car exhibition, a street art exhibition and many other exciting events. With sightseeing opportunities, historic relics, outdoor activities (yes, plenty of them), the casino and the downtown shopping, this small city has a lot to offer.

Bethlehem's climate falls in the humid continental climate zone. Summers are typically hot and humid, fall and spring are generally mild, and winter is cold. Precipitation is distributed throughout the year, with thunderstorms in the summer, showers in spring and fall, and snow in winter. The average high temperature varies widely, from 36 °F (2 °C) in January to 84 °F (29 °C) in July. The highest recorded temperature was 105 °F (41 °C), while the lowest recorded temperature was ?16 °F (?27 °C).

Crowd and campus life

Lehigh University does have an active student-activities scene. The university is known to have distinct traditions of its own, and a lot of other events conducted by the students themselves. The numerous fraternities and sororities, leadership programs, arts and international programs and community service organizations always keep the students preoccupied. Life outside the campus is just as exciting. With annual celebrations like Musikfest & Celtic Classic; it's a veritable feast for art enthusiasts - the Pennsylvania Youth Theatre, Stabler Arena, Touchstone Theatre, Banana Factory, DeSales University's Shakespeare Festival, Zoellner Arts Center, Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and more. And this fast growing city has managed to retain its quaint hometown feel by preserving many precious stars from its eclectic past that shine through its progress - the Moravian Bookstore, Bach Choir, & Chamber Singers continue twinkling alongside of the newly emerging Bethlehem Works redevelopment. Even the adventurous kind will be spoilt for choice with the number of choices they will have to choose from- from large parks, to hiking trails, fishing spots and boating areas, Bethlehem has it all.

Alumni

The inventor of the escalator, Jesse W. Reno, graduated from Lehigh in 1883. Terry Hart ’68, professor of practice in mechanical engineering and mechanics, was an astronaut on the space shuttle Challenger.
